New Product Review | Echo Show 10
Review by Brandon Kaplan, Skilled Creative Founder
Unpacked the new Echo Show 10 this week. We’re adding the motion feature to our client projects and I wanted to get a feeling for the experience. I was fully expecting it to be an awkward product but I was surprised by just how useful and charming the rotating feature is. Amazon is clearly working on the accuracy for the feature and they have been serving query prompts about the accuracy of the rotation.
In short, it’s valuable to have the device rotate towards you when you ask a question. It’s valuable when you are using an experience that needs screen access while you are walking around the room. It's valuable when you quickly want to see what song is playing and the screen is already facing you. It’s interesting to see the screen try to follow the person whose voice invoked the device initially.
It has been odd however to have the screen following you at times when you wouldn't expect it to. I think this feature is going to begin raising a whole new slew of questions around security, as this calls into question "open-ended camera tracking," in addition to "open-ended listening". Amazon may want to get ahead of that and put out some educational content about when/where/how the device is tracking you.
All in all, a solid evolution of the platform. I wouldn’t put this device in every room in my house, but in public/family settings, it's been fun and useful to have the rotation feature available.
