Experience Spotlight | Reese’s Book Club Action on Google

Reese’s Book Club Action on Google

Hello Sunshine began as a media company founded by Reese Witherspoon, with the goal of giving women the agency to write and celebrate their own stories. From this mission came Reese’s Book Club, or RBC, which promotes monthly book picks by and about women to a strong community of engaged readers. In the RBC app, book club members can hear from Reese about her newest picks, join discussions with authors or other members, and peruse the archive to plan their next reads.

Now, Google, RBC, and Skilled Creative are bringing the app’s community engagement and love of books to voice with the Reese’s Book Club Action on Google. Users who say, “Hey Google, read with Reese’s Book Club” will gain access to video or audio of “Reese’s Reveal,” where she’ll explain what she loved about this months’ book pick, suggested “book pairings” for the newest picks, exclusive audio of Reese’s reaction to the book’s plot, characters, and more (spoilers included!), and the book recommender, which will ask a few fun questions before matching you with a curated shortlist of recommendations.

This AoG also lets users create and link their RBC accounts via voice, using Google’s new seamless account linking feature. Current RBC members who signed up using their gmail address, including the “login with Google” feature, are able to link their existing account to the voice experience with a single interaction. Users who want to create an account can do the same. This removes many of the previous barriers to account linking via voice for a much improved user experience. Once members link their accounts, they can add book recommendations from the action to their to-be-read pile in the app to return to when they’re picking what to read next.

Quote from Heather Peterson, Account Lead and Strategist at Skilled Creative:

“This was a collaborative effort between Reese’s Book Club, Google, and Skilled Creative, and we’re really proud of how it turned out. Voice is evolving so quickly--even a year ago, I couldn’t have imagined creating such a fun, seamless experience with such complex features. Now, RBC can expand its community and interact with readers in a new, exciting way.”
